Hi everybody!

I'm trying to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 16bit on my old
PortablePC with Windows 3.11 for workgroups. When I double clic on the
"setup.exe" file, appears a message saying: "Microsoft Internet
Explorer x.0 for Win 3.1/NT 3.51 requires a configuration larger than
4 megabytes for reasonable performance. On smaller machines, please
continue to use previous version of Internet Explorer".

I don't understand the problem because this PC has 100MB RAM, and it's
a P-MMX 166 Mhz. processor.

What can I do to install IE on my Win3.11?

Many thanks!

x.0 is non-descriptive.

What IE version are you trying to install?

I tried with both IE 4.0 and IE 5.0 16bits. The same message appears
in both intalls, after double-clic on "SETUP.EXE". I put "x.0" because
it happens in both versions.

Here is the message that appears when installing IE 4.0:

And here the message that appears when installing IE 5.0:

Though your previous post indicated you have enough memory, it does not
surprise me that IE installer outputs wrong messages. Perhaps it is a base
memory issue, or memory manager not configured to its liking or maybe MS
included a dormant expiration date to prevent installations after a certain
date. It's been a long time since I used 3.11 so I don't know what could be
causing this erroneous message.

Append " /f:16" to setup.exe.
Many thanks! It worked perfectly. Now I can use IE5.0 on my old
portable PC.

For future reference, it seems that the relevant switch is also described in
MS KB article :-
"Unable to Install Internet Explorer 5 for Windows 3.1"

Use "setup /f:16", it solves your problem.
