I have an old 486/66 system I put together for retro computing. What was the
fastest VLB video card for windows 3.11?

Also what's a good benchmark program to test a 3.11 system out with?

"THE fastest" - I don't know. Number 9 made a very fast VLB card
with 4MB RAM. I suspect the fastest was most likely an Expert Color
VLB card that actually came with 8MB RAM. I'm still kicking myself
for not grabbing it when a bunch of them showed up on an auction web
site.

WINCheckit v2.03 is good. Especially if you want to compare
performance changes in the system after making modifications.

When I used google 90% of the results were about people wanting the fast DOS
VLB card.

At the moment I have the following I could test:

Diamond Viper VLB 1mb VRAM
Diamond Viper VLB 2mb VRAM
(while both have the P9000 chip for windows acceleration they have 2
different chips for vga)

Diamond Video 3000 (Stealth 64 Video Vram VLB) 4mb (S3 968 Chipset)
Diamond Speedstar pro VLB 1mb DRAM
Hercules graphite 1mb VRAM (IIT chipset)
Matrox Plus 2mb VLB (early matrox chip and a very long card that has space
for another 2mb vram)

I think the matrox and Stealth 64 video are probably among the fastest in
the group along with the Viper's. There are faster PCI cards for win 3.1
thats for sure but I just want to know what the fastest win 3.1x VLB card
(and chipset) was.

The amount of memory generally doesn't affect speed, just resolution
available.
